Historical context

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Lugdunum under the authority of Gallienus and his father Valerian. Following Valerian's accession in September 253, the Roman Senate elevated Gallienus to Augustus, and the empire was divided between them, with Gallienus governing the West and Valerian ruling the East until his capture at Edessa in 260.

First introduced by Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus functioned as a denomination thought to be valued at two denarii. On issues depicting imperial women, such as this piece bearing the obverse legend "SALONINA AVG", the subject's bust is positioned resting upon a crescent moon to indicate the double denomination. The reverse depicts Felicitas holding a caduceus and cornucopiae, paired with the legend "FELICITAS PVBLICA".
