Historical context

During the Crisis of the Third Century, Valerian became Roman emperor in September 253 and had his son Gallienus elevated to the rank of Augustus. The two co-ruled the Roman Empire, with Valerian administering the east and Gallienus governing the west, until Valerian was defeated and captured at Edessa in 260.

This silver antoninianus was produced under the authority of Gallienus and Valerian for Salonina. Originally introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD with an estimated value of two denarii, the denomination featured a crescent moon beneath the bust when depicting an empress. The reverse portrays Gallienus and Salonina clasping hands accompanied by the inscription "CONCORDIA AVGG", while the obverse displays Salonina with the legend "CORN SALONINA AVG".
