Historical context

This antoninianus was issued under the joint authority of the Roman emperors Gallienus and Valerian, who ruled together from 253 until Valerian's capture at Edessa in 260. During this period of the Crisis of the Third Century, the emperors divided the administration of the empire, with Valerian ruling the east and Gallienus controlling the west while confronting external Germanic threats and internal rebellions.

The antoninianus was a denomination introduced in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. On issues depicting an empress, such as this piece struck for Salonina with the obverse inscription CORN SALONINA AVG, the bust typically rested upon a crescent moon. The reverse depicts Vesta holding Victory and a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription VESTA AETERNA.
