Historical context

This coin was issued under the authority of Gallienus, who reigned as Roman emperor alongside his father Valerian from 253 until 260, and subsequently ruled alone until his death in 268. His reign occurred during the Crisis of the Third Century, an era marked by conflicts against usurpers and Germanic tribes as well as the secession of key provinces.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Issues of the denomination depicting an empress or imperial woman featured the bust resting upon a crescent moon, as seen here beneath the bust of Salonina alongside the obverse inscription "SALONINA AVG". The reverse depicts Pudicitia holding a sceptre and raising her veil, paired with the legend "PVDICITIA".
