Historical context

This silver antoninianus was struck at Rome under Gallienus for Salonina. Introduced by Caracalla in early 215, the antoninianus was a coin thought to have been valued at two denarii. Issues depicting women, typically the emperor's wife, displayed the subject's bust resting upon a crescent moon, as seen here accompanying the obverse legend "SALONINA AVG". The reverse bears the legend "PVDICITIA" and depicts the draped figure of Pudicitia holding a sceptre and raising her veil.
