Historical context

This silver antoninianus was issued at the mint of Rome under the authority of Gallienus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 253 to 268. Gallienus initially governed jointly with his father Valerian until 260, before ruling alone during the Crisis of the Third Century until his assassination in 268. His reign was marked by military conflict against Germanic tribes and multiple usurpers.

The antoninianus was introduced in early 215 as a denomination thought to be valued at two denarii. On issues depicting imperial women, such as this piece bearing the obverse legend "SALONINA AVG" for Salonina, the bust rested upon a crescent moon to indicate the double denomination, contrasting with the radiate crown used for emperors. The reverse features Venus accompanied by Cupid, inscribed "VENVS GENETRIX".
