Historical context

This coin was issued at Rome under Gallienus, who ruled as Roman emperor jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and as sole ruler from 260 to 268. His fifteen-year reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, an era of civil conflict, Germanic invasions, and the secession of provinces.

Struck in silver, the piece is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Issues of this denomination depicting women, typically the emperor's wife, displayed the bust set upon a crescent moon, as seen here beneath the bust of Salonina paired with the obverse inscription "SALONINA AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "VENVS VICTRIX" alongside an image of the goddess Venus.
