Historical context

The antoninianus was introduced in early 215 AD and is thought to have been valued at two denarii. On issues depicting imperial women, such as the emperor's wife, the bust was placed upon a crescent moon to indicate the double denomination. This piece portrays Salonina with the obverse inscription "SALONINA AVG", set above a crescent. The reverse pairs the inscription "VESTA" with a depiction of the draped goddess seated left, holding a patera and a sceptre.
