Historical context
Gallienus ruled the Roman Empire jointly with his father Valerian from 253 to 260, and subsequently as sole emperor until his death in September 268. His reign took place during the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by civil conflict, Germanic incursions, and the secession of provinces. Gallienus maintained military activity around Mediolanum, destroying an Alemanni force there in 259.
Struck at Mediolanum under the authority of Gallienus, this silver antoninianus was produced as part of an imperial denomination introduced in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The antoninianus typically identified female imperial portraiture by placing the bust upon a crescent moon, as seen here with the obverse depiction of Salonina accompanied by the inscription SALONINA AVG. The reverse design presents Venus with Cupid alongside the legend VENVS FELIX.
