Historical context

Produced at the Siscia mint, this silver piece is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Antoniniani depicting an emperor's wife featured the bust resting upon a crescent moon, as seen here beneath the bust of Salonina paired with the obverse inscription "SALONINA AVG". The reverse depicts Aequitas holding scales and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "AEQVITAS AVG". Over time, the silver content of antoniniani was progressively debased to fund military expenditure, fueling ongoing inflation across the empire.
