Antoninianus in silver struck at Ticinum under Aurelian, AD 270–AD 275, catalogued as RIC V Severina 10. Obverse: Bust of Severina, diademed, draped, on crescent, right.

Reverse: Fides, draped, standing right, holding ensign in each hand, facing Sol, radiate, standing left, raising right hand and holding globe in left hand. Obverse legend: SEVERINA AVG. Reverse legend: PROVIDENTIA DEORVM.

Historical context

Ulpia Severina served as Roman empress as the wife of Emperor Aurelian from circa 270 to 275, likely being proclaimed Augusta in the autumn of 274. Aurelian reunited the Roman Empire during the Crisis of the Third Century, carrying out monetary reforms to curb currency devaluation. The antoninianus, originally introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD, conventionally depicted imperial women with their bust set upon a crescent moon.
