Historical context

The piece is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Characterised by the portrait of the ruler wearing a radiate crown, the denomination was initially struck in silver but suffered progressive debasement throughout the third century AD as silver bullion supplies ran short and successive rulers required coin to pay troops. On this issue, the obverse legend reads "IMP C CL TACITVS AVG", whilst the reverse depicts Aequitas holding scales and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "AEQVITAS AVG". Related varieties of the type were also produced across other mints.
