Historical context

First introduced in early AD 215 by Caracalla, the antoninianus was a denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown shown on the emperor's portrait. Originally struck in silver, the denomination suffered progressive debasement throughout the third century as silver bullion supplies declined and rulers required money to pay soldiers. The obverse presents Tacitus bearing the imperial title with the legend IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG. The reverse design depicts Felicitas, draped and holding a caduceus alongside a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription FELIC TEM, FELIC TEMP, FELICIT TEM, or FELICIT TEMP.
