Historical context

This silver coin was produced for the Roman Empire under the authority of Tacitus, having been struck at the mint of Ticinum. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait alongside the legend "IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG".

The denomination of this piece is an antoninianus, also known as a pre-reform radiate, which was introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and is thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor indicated that the coin was a double denomination. Initially minted in silver, the denomination suffered progressive debasement down to bronze with minimal silver content as successive soldier emperors and usurpers required coinage to pay soldiers and secure their loyalty amidst dwindling silver bullion reserves. The reverse of this issue displays Pax draped and holding an olive branch alongside a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "PAX AVGVSTI".
