Historical context
The antoninianus, originally introduced by Caracalla in early AD 215, was a denomination thought to be valued at two denarii. It traditionally depicted the emperor wearing a radiate crown to denote a double denomination. By the late third century, supplies of bullion were diminished and issues were debased as the Roman Empire faced economic strain. This piece carries the obverse legend "IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG" and pairs it with a reverse showing Salus alongside the inscription "SALVS PVBLI".
