RIC V Tacitus 163. Denomination: Antoninianus. Authority: Tacitus. Mint: Ticinum. The obverse shows bust of Tacitus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right or bust of Tacitus, radiate, cuirassed, right, with the legend IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG.

The reverse shows securitas, draped, standing left, legs crossed, leaning on column, raising right hand to head, with the legend SECVRIT PERP.

Historical context

Marcus Claudius Tacitus ruled as Roman emperor from 275 until his death in June 276, conducting campaigns against the Goths and the Heruli during his brief reign. This antoninianus was struck at Ticinum, where the imperial mint had been relocated from Mediolanum by Emperor Aurelian in 275. The denomination, first introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD, traditionally displayed the emperor wearing a radiate crown.
