Historical context
This silver antoninianus was produced under the authority of Tacitus at the mint of Siscia within the Roman Empire.
The denomination, originally introduced by Caracalla in early AD 215, was thought to have been valued at two denarii and was distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. Over the course of the third century, issues of the denomination were repeatedly debased as supplies of silver bullion ran short and soldier emperors required coin to pay troops and secure loyalty. On this piece, the obverse bears the emperor's bust with the inscription "IMP C M CLA TACITVS AVG". The reverse portrays Felicitas standing beside an altar, holding a patera and a caduceus, accompanied by the legend "FELICITAS SAECVLI".
