Historical context

This coin was produced in the Roman Empire under the imperial authority of Tacitus, whose official title is presented on the obverse legend as "IMP C CL TACITVS AVG".

Struck as a silver antoninianus, the denomination was first introduced by Caracalla in early AD 215 as a double denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor, the antoninianus served as standard circulating imperial money, though repeated debasement and diminishing silver supplies caused progressive inflation throughout the third century until the denomination ceased to be used following late third-century monetary reforms. On this issue, the reverse design features Pax, draped and holding an olive branch and sceptre, accompanied by the legend "PAX PVBLICA".
