Historical context

The emperor is named in the obverse inscription "IMP C CL TACITVS AVG".

The antoninianus was introduced by Caracalla in early AD 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii. It featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown, as seen on this issue, though its intrinsic silver content was originally equal to only 1.5 denarii. Successive debasements occurred as supplies of bullion fell short and soldier emperors required coin to pay troops and secure their loyalty. By the late third century, these coins experienced severe debasement before ceasing production following monetary reforms. The reverse of this coin features Providentia, draped and holding a baton and cornucopiae, with a globe at her feet, accompanied by the inscription "PROVID DEOR".
