Historical context

The mint where this specific issue was struck remains uncertain.

The coin is an antoninianus, also referred to as a pre-reform radiate, a denomination originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the emperor wearing a radiate crown to denote a double denomination, the antoninianus was initially struck in silver but was progressively debased over time to bronze containing minimal silver content. On this silver piece, the obverse legend reads "IMP CL TACITVS AVG", whilst the reverse features the legend "SPES PVBLICA" accompanying a depiction of Spes walking left.
