Historical context

The antoninianus was introduced in early AD 215 by Caracalla as a denomination thought to be valued at two denarii. While initially struck in silver, it suffered progressive debasement because silver bullion supplies dwindled and a succession of emperors and usurpers required coinage to pay soldiers and secure their loyalty. The coin type typically distinguished its double denomination by portraying the emperor with a radiate crown, as seen here alongside the obverse inscription "IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG". The reverse depicts the draped figure of Laetitia carrying a wreath and an anchor, accompanied by the inscription "LAETITIA FVND" or "LAETITIAE FVND".
