Historical context

Introduced in early 215 AD by Caracalla, the antoninianus was a coin thought to have been valued at two denarii. It was typically characterized by the depiction of the emperor wearing a radiate crown, which indicated its status as a double denomination. The reverse of this coin features Providentia standing with a baton, cornucopiae, and a globe at her feet, accompanied by the legend "PROVIDENTIA AVG".
