Historical context

Tetricus I was a Gallo-Roman nobleman who ruled the Gallic Empire from 271 to 274 AD, having previously served as provincial governor of Gallia Aquitania. He assumed the imperial title following the murder of Victorinus, supported by Victorinus's mother, Victoria. Throughout his reign, Tetricus confronted incursions by Germanic raiders alongside military pressure from the central Roman Empire, which eventually culminated in his surrender to Emperor Aurelian at the Battle of Châlons.

Struck at Cologne or the Southern Gallic Mint, this coin is an antoninianus, a denomination originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD with an intended value of two denarii. The type featured a radiate crown on the ruler's portrait to designate this double denomination, though silver shortages and escalating expenditure to secure troop loyalty led to continuous debasement of the denomination during the third century. The reverse depicts Spes walking while holding a flower and raising her robe, paired with the legend "SPES AVG".
