Historical context

Tetricus I was a Gallo-Roman nobleman who governed Gallia Aquitania before ruling as emperor of the Gallic Empire from 271 to 274 AD. Coming to power following the murder of Victorinus, he faced external threats from Germanic raiders alongside pressure from the Roman Empire. His reign concluded following the invasion of the Roman emperor Aurelian and the Battle of Châlons, where Tetricus surrendered.

This coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Originally silver, the denomination was progressively debased over the third century as rulers required coin to pay troops and secure their loyalty. The type features the radiate bust characteristic of the denomination, alongside obverse legends reading "IMP C TETRICVS P F AVG" or "IMP C TETRICVS P F AV". Produced at Cologne or a Southern Gallic mint, the reverse carries the inscription "SPES PVBLICA" and depicts Spes holding a flower and raising her robe.
