Historical context

Confronting growing internal tensions, he named his son Tetricus II caesar in 273, before ultimately surrendering to the Roman emperor Aurelian at the Battle of Châlons.

This coin is an antoninianus struck either at Cologne or a southern Gallic mint. First introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD as a denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus traditionally indicated its double value by depicting the emperor wearing a radiate crown. By the late third century, soldier emperors and competing rulers produced antoniniani in vast quantities to supply and secure the loyalty of their troops. The reverse design features a standing soldier bearing a spear and shield, paired with the legend "VIRTVS AVGG".
