Historical context

Tetricus I, a Gallo-Roman nobleman and former provincial governor of Gallia Aquitania, ruled the secessionist Gallic Empire from 271 to 274 AD following the murder of Victorinus. Faced with Germanic raids and pressure from Rome, he appointed his son, Tetricus II, as caesar in 273 and possibly co-emperor in 274. His reign concluded with his surrender to the Roman emperor Aurelian at the Battle of Châlons.

The obverse depicts jugate busts of Tetricus I and Tetricus II with the legend IMPP TETRICI PII AVGG, referencing the two rulers. The reverse displays Hilaritas draped and holding a palm and cornucopiae, flanked by two children, alongside the legend HILARITAS AVGG.
