Historical context

Tetricus I was a Gallo-Roman nobleman who governed Gallia Aquitania before ruling as emperor of the Gallic Empire between 271 and 274 AD. Confronting incursions by Germanic raiders alongside growing internal strains, he appointed his son, Tetricus II, as caesar in 273. His reign concluded following the invasion of the Roman emperor Aurelian and the Battle of Châlons, after which Tetricus surrendered.

This antoninianus, struck under the authority of Tetricus I at Cologne or a Southern Gallic mint, represents a denomination originally introduced in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The obverse depicts his son as caesar, bearing the legend "C P E TETRICVS CAES" or "C P E TETRICVS CES". The reverse features pontifical implements alongside the legend "PIETAS AVGG".
