Historical context

Confronted by Germanic raids and mounting internal pressure, he elevated his son, Tetricus II, to the rank of caesar in 273. His reign concluded following the invasion of the Roman emperor Aurelian and Tetricus's surrender at the Battle of Châlons.

This silver antoninianus was produced under Tetricus I at Cologne or a Southern Gallic mint. The denomination, originally introduced by Caracalla, was considered equal to two denarii and conventionally depicted male rulers wearing a radiate crown. Struck on behalf of his son, the obverse bears the portrait of Tetricus II as caesar, alongside the legend "C P E TETRICVS CAES" or "C P E TETRICVS CES". The reverse depicts pontifical implements paired with variants of the legend, such as "PIETAS AVGVS", "PIETAS AVGVSTO", "PIETAS AVGVSTOR", or "PIETAS AVSTO".
