Historical context

During his reign, he faced external threats from Germanic raiders and the Roman Empire, alongside growing internal difficulties. These internal pressures led him to elevate his son, Tetricus II, to the rank of caesar in 273 AD, before ultimately surrendering to Emperor Aurelian following the Battle of Châlons.

This silver antoninianus was produced under the authority of Tetricus I at Cologne or a Southern Gallic mint. First introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD, the antoninianus was valued at two denarii, characterized by a radiate crown signifying a double denomination. Struck in the name of the junior ruler, the obverse bears the title "C PIV ESV TETRICVS CAES", while the reverse legend "PRINC IVVENT" accompanies depictions of Tetricus II.
