Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at Cologne or the Southern Gallic Mint under the authority of Tetricus I. Introduced under Caracalla as a double-denomination coin thought to be valued at two denarii, the antoninianus had suffered extensive debasement by the late third century AD. The obverse depicts his son with a radiate bust and the legend "C PIV ESV TETRICVS CAES", while the reverse carries the inscription "VIRTVS AVG" alongside a standing soldier equipped with a spear and shield.
