Historical context
Supported by Victoria, mother of the murdered emperor Victorinus, Tetricus faced Germanic raids alongside mounting pressure from the seceded Roman Empire. His reign ended following the invasion of the Roman emperor Aurelian and the Battle of Châlons, where Tetricus surrendered before receiving an appointment as governor of Lucania et Bruttium.
Struck at Cologne or the Southern Gallic Mint, this coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Amid diminishing silver bullion supplies across the third century, rulers and usurpers required coinage to pay soldiers and secure their allegiance. The obverse presents Tetricus I with the legend "IMP TETRICVS AVG", while the reverse displays Fides holding two ensigns alongside the legend "FIDES MILITVM".
