Historical context

Tetricus I, a Gallo-Roman nobleman and former governor of Gallia Aquitania, ruled the secessionist Gallic Empire from 271 to 274 AD following the murder of Victorinus. His reign was marked by external incursions from Germanic raiders and pressure from the Roman Empire. Internally challenged, he elevated his son Tetricus II to caesar in 273 before surrendering to the Roman emperor Aurelian at the Battle of Châlons in 273 or 274.

This coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD that was originally valued at two denarii and characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. Produced at Cologne and a Southern Gallic Mint, the issue features an obverse legend naming the emperor as "IMP C TETRICVS P F AVG" or "IMP C TETRICVS P F AV". The reverse pairs the inscription "HILARITAS AVGG" with a depiction of Hilaritas holding a palm and cornucopiae.
