Historical context

Seceding from the Roman Empire, his realm faced incursions from Germanic raiders alongside internal unrest. To bolster his authority, he elevated his son, Tetricus II, to caesar in 273 AD, before surrendering to the Roman emperor Aurelian at the Battle of Châlons in 273 or 274 AD.

Struck at Cologne or the Southern Gallic Mint, this coin is an antoninianus, a denomination originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The obverse depicts Tetricus I with a radiate crown, a characteristic feature denoting the double denomination. The reverse portrays the personification Laetitia holding a wreath and an anchor, accompanied by the legend "LAETITIA AVGG".
