Historical context

Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus ruled as Roman emperor alongside his father, Valerian, from 253 to 260, within the Crisis of the Third Century. After Valerian became emperor in September 253, the Roman Senate elevated Gallienus to the rank of Augustus. Valerian subsequently divided the administration of the empire, governing the east while his son ruled the west.

This bronze sestertius was struck at the mint of Rome under the joint authority of Gallienus and Valerian. The obverse presents a laureate, cuirassed bust of Valerian accompanied by the legend "IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts the nude deity Apollo holding a laurel-branch alongside a lyre placed upon a rock, framed by the legend "APOLINI CONSERVA".
