Historical context

Valerian became Roman emperor in September 253 and had the Roman Senate elevate his son Gallienus to the rank of Augustus. Valerian and Gallienus ruled together from 253 to 260, dividing the empire so that Valerian ruled the east while Gallienus governed the west. Operating in the western empire, Gallienus destroyed an Alemanni army at Mediolanum in 259.

This silver antoninianus was struck at Mediolanum under the joint authority of Valerian and Gallienus. Introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a coin valued at two denarii, the denomination featured the radiate crown on depictions of emperors to indicate its double denomination. The obverse bears the portrait and name of Valerian with the legend IMP C P LIC VALERIANO AVG. The reverse design features Victory standing with a shield, palm, and a captive at her feet, accompanied by the legend VICTORIA GERMANICA.
