Historical context

Publius Licinius Valerianus served as Roman emperor from AD 253 until the spring of 260, ascending to power during the turbulent Crisis of the Third Century before naming his son Gallienus co-emperor. Struck at Antioch in Syria in AD 253, this issue dates to the beginning of Valerian's reign, prior to his capture by the Persian emperor Shapur I following the Battle of Edessa.
