Historical context

Valerian ruled as Roman emperor from 253 until the spring of 260 AD, rising to power amidst the instabilities of the Crisis of the Third Century and naming his son Gallienus as co-emperor. The aureus served as the principal gold denomination of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC until its eventual replacement by the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
