Historical context
Publius Licinius Cornelius Valerianus, known as Valerian II, was the eldest son of Emperor Gallienus and grandson of the Emperor Valerian. His grandfather ruled from 253 to spring 260 AD, having risen to power during the Crisis of the Third Century and naming Gallienus as co-emperor. This gold aureus was struck in AD 255 at Lugdunum, an ancient city in Gaul founded in 43 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus.
