Historical context

Valerian II was the eldest son of Emperor Gallienus and grandson of Emperor Valerian, who belonged to a traditional senatorial family. This antoninianus was produced in AD 255 at Lugdunum, a prominent Roman city in Gaul and the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis, during the reign of Valerian. Denominations of this kind had originally been introduced in early 215 by Caracalla, who had been born in Lugdunum.
