Historical context

Marcus Piavonius Victorinus was emperor in the Gallic provinces from 268 to 270 or 269 to 271, following the brief reign of Marius. His aureus was produced at the ancient mint of Cologne, which originated in the 1st century AD as Colonia Agrippina and served as the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior. The aureus was the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC until it was superseded by the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
