Historical context

Marcus Piavonius Victorinus ruled as emperor in the Gallic provinces from 268 to 270 or 269 to 271, coming to power after the brief reign of Marius before he was eventually murdered by a jealous husband. The aureus was the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until it was superseded by the solidus in the early 4th century AD. This issue honours Legio I Minervia, an imperial legion founded in AD 82 by Emperor Domitian for operations against the Chatti. Based at its primary camp in Bonna in Germania Inferior, the unit earned the cognomen Pia Fidelis Domitiana after suppressing a provincial revolt in 89.
