Historical context

In 305, Galerius admitted his nephew Maximinus Daza into the Tetrarchy with the rank of caesar, a controversial appointment that contributed to the outbreak of civil wars the following year. Around the same time, Constantine I served under Galerius before being proclaimed augustus by his troops at Eboracum in 306. Maximinus later claimed the title of augustus in 310, sharing and contesting power with rival rulers across the Roman Empire until his defeat and death in 313. Struck at Alexandria in Egypt, this coinage reflects the complex political arrangements of the Tetrarchic system, under which Maximinus held authority while Constantine was acknowledged as filius Augusti.
