Historical context

Maximinus Daia, born Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was admitted to the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius. He claimed the title of augustus in 310, sharing and contesting power with Licinius during the civil wars of the Tetrarchy. A committed pagan, he ruled as Roman emperor until 313, when he was routed at the Battle of Tzirallum and died during the subsequent retreat.

This bronze AE2 coin was produced at the Alexandria mint during Maximinus Daia's tenure as emperor. The obverse legend acknowledges his rank as augustus with the title "IMP C GALER VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts a Genius standing and holding a patera and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "BONO GENIO PII - IMPERATORIS".
