Historical context

Maximinus Daza, born Galerius Valerius Maximinus, was Roman emperor from 310 to 313, having entered the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 through his uncle Galerius. He claimed the title of augustus in 310, sharing and contesting power with Licinius. Holding authority over Egypt as the last ruler with the title of Pharaoh, Maximinus maintained the mint at Alexandria before openly turning against Licinius in 313.

Struck at Alexandria as a bronze AE2 under Maximinus Daia, this piece features the laureate head of his rival Licinius accompanied by the obverse inscription IMP C LIC LICINNIVS P F AVG. The reverse design bears the legend GENIO - AVGVSTI and depicts a nude genius wearing a modius with a chlamys over the left shoulder, holding a cornucopiae and the head of Serapis.
