Historical context

Maximinus Daza, born around 270, entered the Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 and claimed the title of augustus in 310, ruling as Roman emperor until 313. During his reign, he shared and frequently contested imperial power with Licinius. A committed pagan who carried out persecutions against Christians, Maximinus held authority over Egypt as the last figure bearing the title of Pharaoh before open conflict erupted between him and Licinius in 313.

Struck at the mint of Alexandria, this bronze AE2 coinage was issued under the authority of Maximinus Daia while depicting Licinius on the obverse alongside the legend "IMP C LIC LICINNIVS P F AVG".
