Historical context

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having risen through the military ranks before being proclaimed emperor by the army. His reign brought stability following the Crisis of the Third Century and established the Tetrarchy, dividing governance of the empire. Diocletian secured the borders and suppressed usurpers in Egypt between 297 and 298. This issue was struck under his authority at Alexandria, an ancient city and major seaport founded in Egypt in 331 BC.
