Historical context
Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305. To stabilise the Roman Empire, he established the Tetrarchy, dividing authority among four rulers. In 293, Diocletian appointed Constantius Chlorus as a junior colleague with the rank of caesar, alongside Galerius. Constantius served as caesar until becoming augustus in 305. This coinage was struck under Diocletian's authority at the major Egyptian port of Alexandria, which had been founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great.
