Historical context

His reign brought stability to the Roman Empire and ended the Crisis of the Third Century. In 286, he appointed his fellow officer Maximian as Augustus to serve as co-emperor, dividing imperial rule between the Western Empire under Maximian and the Eastern Empire under Diocletian as senior Augustus.

This bronze AE1 issue was struck under the authority of Diocletian at the mint of Alexandria. The obverse depicts the laureate head of his co-ruler Maximian, accompanied by the inscription IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG. The reverse design features the Genius of the Roman people, shown nude, wearing a modius, and holding a patera and cornucopiae, with the legend GENIO POPV-L-I ROMANI, GENIO POP-V-LI ROMANI, or GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI.
