Historical context

Diocletian served as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having been proclaimed by troops following the deaths of Carus and Numerian. His reign ended the Crisis of the Third Century and established the Tetrarchy, in which he ruled the Eastern Empire as senior Augustus. During his rule, he secured imperial borders, reorganised provincial administration, and suppressed usurpers in Egypt between 297 and 298.

This bronze AE1 issue was struck under Diocletian at the mint of Alexandria. The obverse presents a laureate head of Diocletian accompanied by the imperial title "IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG". On the reverse, the coin features the Genius of the Roman people, depicted nude wearing a modius with a draped chlamys, holding a patera and cornucopiae, paired with legend variants reading "GENIO POPV-L-I ROMANI", "GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI", "GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI", or "GENIO POPVL-I ROMANI".
