Historical context

Galerius Valerius Maximinus, born as Daza, entered the Roman imperial college in 305 when his uncle Galerius admitted him to the Tetrarchy with the rank of caesar. Maximinus was later emperor from 310 to 313, ruling as the last figure to hold the title of Pharaoh of Egypt, before contesting power against Licinius and dying in 313 during a military retreat.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced at the mint of Alexandria during the period when Maximinus held the subordinate imperial position, titled on the obverse as "GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES". The reverse type pairs the martial figure of Virtus, depicted draped, cuirassed, and carrying a spear, shield, and trophy, with the reverse legend "VIRTVS EX-ERCITVS" or "VIRTVS E-X-ERCITVS".
